Dentures

Losing teeth can quietly change your life. Meals become harder, conversations feel awkward, and you may stop smiling in photos. Today’s dentures are lighter, better fitting, and far more natural looking than the dentures of the past, and they can give you back the confidence to eat, speak, and laugh freely.

At Gainesville Dental Associates, we design complete, partial, and implant-supported dentures around your mouth, your face, and your daily life. From your first visit to every adjustment afterward, we make sure your new smile feels like your own. Call (703) 754-7151 to schedule a denture consultation.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. They are made from durable acrylic resin, sometimes combined with a lightweight metal framework, and are custom shaped and shaded to fit comfortably and blend with your features. Dentures restore your ability to chew and speak, support your lips and cheeks, and fill out your smile.

Benefits of Custom Dentures

  • Enjoy your meals again. Restore the chewing ability you need for a healthy, varied diet.
  • Speak with ease. Replacing missing teeth helps you pronounce words clearly and naturally.
  • Support your facial features. Dentures fill out the lips and cheeks, softening the sunken look that missing teeth can cause.
  • Keep remaining teeth in place. Partial dentures prevent natural teeth from drifting into empty spaces.
  • A natural-looking smile. Tooth shape, size, and shade are chosen to complement your face and skin tone.
  • An affordable solution. Dentures are one of the most cost-effective ways to replace many teeth at once.

Types of Dentures We Offer

Conventional Complete Dentures

Conventional dentures replace a full arch of teeth and are placed after any remaining teeth have been removed and the gums have healed, usually over several weeks to a few months. Because they are made for fully healed tissue, they tend to fit well from day one. If you need teeth removed first, our team, including an oral surgeon, can handle your extractions in our office.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are made before your teeth are removed and placed right after your extractions, so you never have to go without teeth. Your gums and bone naturally shrink as they heal, especially during the first six months, so immediate dentures usually need a reline or rebase to keep a secure fit.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture fills the gaps left by one or more missing teeth when some natural teeth remain. It has gum-colored acrylic bases joined by a thin metal framework. Partials are held in place with either:

  • Metal clasps that grip neighboring teeth, a reliable and budget-friendly option, or
  • Precision attachments that connect discreetly to crowns on your natural teeth for a more natural look.

If you are missing only one or two teeth in a row, a fixed dental bridge may also be an option.

Overdentures and Implant-Supported Dentures

An overdenture fits over a few remaining natural teeth or dental implants, giving it far more stability than a traditional denture. Implant-supported dentures snap securely onto two or more implants, eliminating slipping and adhesives and helping preserve your jawbone. For a fixed, non-removable full arch, ask about TeethXpress.

How Your Dentures Are Made

Creating dentures that fit and look natural takes several carefully planned steps. The process usually takes about a month and around five appointments:

  1. Exam and planning. We examine your mouth, take X-rays or 3D images as needed, and discuss your goals, options, and costs. If you have gum disease, we treat it first.
  2. We take detailed impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth.
  3. Bite record. A wax bite rim records how your jaws come together and the ideal height for your new teeth.
  4. Try-in. You try on a wax version of your denture so you can see and approve the shape, color, and fit before it is finished.
  5. Final placement. We deliver your finished dentures, make any needed adjustments, and show you how to wear and care for them.

Getting Used to Your New Dentures

It is normal for new dentures to feel a little bulky or loose for the first few weeks while the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to hold them in place. These tips help you adjust faster:

  • Begin with soft foods cut into small pieces, and chew slowly on both sides of your mouth at once.
  • Practice speaking and reading aloud. If your dentures click, speak a little more slowly.
  • If your dentures shift when you laugh or cough, gently bite down and swallow to reposition them.
  • Expect a little extra saliva and minor sore spots at first. Both usually improve quickly.
  • Keep your follow-up visits so we can fine-tune the fit.

Caring for Your Dentures

  • Brush your dentures every day with a denture brush or soft brush, cleaning carefully under any clasps.
  • Use a denture cleanser with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Avoid household cleaners and abrasive toothpastes, which can scratch the surface.
  • Keep dentures moist when you are not wearing them so they do not dry out or warp. Soak them overnight in water or a soaking solution, but ask us first if your partial has metal attachments, since some solutions can tarnish metal.
  • Each morning, brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth with a soft brush to keep your mouth healthy.
  • Handle dentures over a folded towel or a sink of water in case you drop them.
  • Visit us for regular checkups to check the fit, examine your gums and remaining teeth, and screen for oral health problems.

Denture Adhesives: When They Help

Denture adhesive can give a well-fitting denture extra hold and peace of mind. It is not a fix for a denture that fits poorly. Using adhesive to hold a loose denture can lead to sore spots, irritation, and faster bone loss. If you find yourself needing more and more adhesive, it is time for an adjustment or reline.

Adjustments, Relines, and Repairs

Your mouth changes over time, so dentures need periodic care to stay comfortable. A reline reshapes the inner surface of the denture to restore a snug fit. A rebase replaces the entire pink base while keeping your existing teeth. Over many years, a new denture may be the best choice.

If your denture breaks, cracks, chips, loses a tooth, or suddenly feels loose, call us right away. Many repairs can be completed the same day. Avoid at-home repair kits and glues, which can permanently damage the denture. For urgent problems, our emergency dental team is ready to help.

How Much Do Dentures Cost?

The cost of dentures depends on the type you choose, the materials, and whether you need extractions or other treatment first. For example, partial dentures with precision attachments cost more than those with clasps, and implant-supported dentures involve additional treatment. Many dental insurance plans cover part of the cost. We provide a clear estimate before treatment and offer flexible financing options, including CareCredit.

Denture FAQs

How long does it take to get new dentures?

Most dentures are completed in about a month over roughly five appointments: an exam, impressions, a bite record, a try-in, and final placement. If teeth need to be removed first, an immediate denture can be ready the day of your extractions so you are never without teeth.

What is the difference between complete and partial dentures?

A complete denture replaces all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. A partial denture replaces one or more missing teeth and attaches to your remaining natural teeth with clasps or precision attachments, helping keep those teeth from shifting.

How long will it take to get used to my dentures?

Most people feel comfortable eating and speaking with new dentures within a few weeks. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chew on both sides at once, and practice reading aloud. Small adjustments at follow-up visits help relieve any sore spots.

Should I use denture adhesive?

Adhesive can add extra security and confidence to a denture that already fits well. It is not meant to fix a loose or poorly fitting denture, which can cause sores and bone loss. If your denture feels loose, call us for an adjustment or reline instead.

Can you repair a broken denture?

Yes. Cracked, chipped, or broken dentures and dentures with a missing tooth can often be repaired the same day. Please do not use glue or a do-it-yourself repair kit, which can damage the denture and change how it fits.

How often do dentures need to be relined or replaced?

Your gums and jawbone slowly change shape over time, so most dentures need a reline every few years to restore a snug fit. Immediate dentures usually need a reline within the first six months as the gums heal. Many dentures are replaced after 5 to 10 years of wear.

Are implant-supported dentures better than regular dentures?

Implant-supported dentures snap onto dental implants, so they do not slip, need no adhesive, and allow a much stronger bite. They also help preserve the jawbone. Traditional dentures cost less and require no surgery. We will help you weigh both options during your consultation.
