Veneers
If you find yourself hiding your smile in photos because of stains, chips, gaps, or uneven teeth, porcelain veneers can change that. These thin, custom-crafted shells cover the front of your teeth to create a bright, balanced, natural-looking smile, often in just a few visits.
At Gainesville Dental Associates, we design veneers around your face, your features, and the smile you have always wanted. We welcome patients from Gainesville, Haymarket, Bristow, Manassas, Warrenton, and Nokesville. Call (703) 884-2148 to schedule your veneer consultation.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are ultra-thin shells, about the thickness of a contact lens, that are permanently bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth. They are custom made to the shape, size, and shade you choose, so they blend beautifully with your smile. Most veneers are made from high-quality dental porcelain, which mimics the way natural enamel reflects light and resists staining far better than natural teeth.
What Can Veneers Fix?
Veneers are one of the most versatile treatments in cosmetic dentistry. They can correct:
- Stubborn stains and discoloration that do not improve with professional teeth whitening
- Chipped, cracked, or worn teeth from injury, grinding, or everyday wear
- Gaps between teeth for a more even, uniform smile
- Slightly crooked or misaligned teeth when you want results without orthodontics
- Teeth that are too small, short, or oddly shaped
- Uneven smile lines caused by teeth of different lengths
Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
- A natural-looking smile. Porcelain reflects light like real enamel, so your veneers look like your own teeth, only better.
- Long-lasting stain resistance. Porcelain resists coffee, tea, and red wine stains much better than natural teeth or composite resin.
- A complete smile makeover in weeks. Veneers can correct color, shape, size, and minor alignment issues all at once.
- Durable results. With good care, porcelain veneers commonly last 10 to 15 years or more.
- Conservative compared with crowns. Veneers cover only the front of the tooth, so far less natural tooth structure is removed.
- A boost in confidence. Patients often tell us they smile, laugh, and speak up more freely after treatment.
Types of Veneers
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are crafted in a dental lab from thin layers of ceramic. They offer the most lifelike appearance, the best stain resistance, and the longest lifespan. They are the ideal choice for patients who want a lasting, high-impact smile transformation.
Composite Veneers
Composite veneers are made from tooth-colored resin that is sculpted directly onto your teeth, often in a single visit. They cost less and require little or no enamel removal, but they are more prone to staining and chipping and need replacing sooner. For small corrections, dental bonding uses the same material and may be all you need.
Are Veneers Right for You?
You may be a great candidate for veneers if you:
- Have healthy teeth and gums, free of active decay
- Want to improve the color, shape, or size of several front teeth
- Have stains that whitening cannot fix
- Are ready for a long-term cosmetic investment
- Are willing to wear a night guard if you grind or clench your teeth
If you have cavities or gum disease, we will treat those first so your veneers have a healthy foundation. If a tooth is badly broken or has had a root canal, a dental crown may offer better strength. Missing teeth can be replaced with a dental implant or bridge that is shaded to match your new veneers.
Veneers vs. Bonding vs. Invisalign
- Porcelain veneers change the color, shape, and size of your teeth for a dramatic, long-lasting result.
- Dental bonding is a quick, affordable fix for one or two small chips, gaps, or spots, completed in a single visit.
- Invisalign clear aligners straighten your natural teeth without altering them. If crowding is your main concern, straightening first may reduce or eliminate the need for veneers.
During your consultation, we will explain the pros, cons, and costs of each option so you can choose with confidence.
The Veneer Process, Step by Step
- Consultation and smile design. We listen to your goals, examine your teeth and gums, and take photos and images, including 3D imaging when needed. Together, we plan the shape, length, and shade of your new smile.
- Tooth preparation. After numbing the area, your dentist gently removes a very thin layer of enamel, usually about half a millimeter, so your veneers sit naturally and are not bulky.
- Impressions and temporary veneers. We take precise impressions of your prepared teeth and send them to a skilled dental lab. You leave with temporary veneers to protect your teeth and preview your new smile.
- Lab fabrication. Over about two to three weeks, a dental technician handcrafts your porcelain veneers to the exact specifications of your smile design.
- Bonding your veneers. We check the fit and color, make any final adjustments, and permanently bond each veneer in place with a strong dental adhesive and curing light.
- Follow-up visit. A short follow-up lets us confirm your bite feels natural and your gums are healthy around your new veneers.
Caring for Your Veneers
- Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste, and floss daily.
- Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails, and do not use your teeth to open packages.
- Wear a night guard if you grind or clench your teeth, and a sports mouthguard for contact sports.
- Limit coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco. Porcelain resists stains, but the bonding edges and your natural teeth can still discolor.
- Keep up with professional cleanings and checkups so we can monitor your veneers and your gum health.
If a veneer ever chips, cracks, or comes loose, save any pieces and call us. Our emergency dental team can see urgent cases promptly.
How Much Do Veneers Cost?
The cost of veneers depends on the number of teeth treated, the type of veneer, and whether any preparatory treatment is needed. Because veneers are usually considered cosmetic, most insurance plans do not cover them. We provide a clear treatment estimate before you begin, and our flexible financing options, including CareCredit, can make your new smile more affordable with manageable monthly payments.

Porcelain Veneer FAQs
How long do porcelain veneers last?
With good care, porcelain veneers commonly last 10 to 15 years, and often longer. Composite veneers usually last about 5 to 7 years. Daily brushing and flossing, regular checkups, and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth all help your veneers last.
Does getting veneers hurt?
Most patients are comfortable throughout treatment. We numb the area before gently preparing your teeth, and many people need nothing more than an over-the-counter pain reliever, if anything, afterward. Some temporary sensitivity to hot and cold is normal and fades quickly.
How many visits does it take to get veneers?
Porcelain veneers usually take two to three visits over about three to four weeks: a consultation and smile design visit, a preparation visit where we take impressions and place temporary veneers, and a final visit to bond your custom veneers in place.
Are veneers permanent?
Traditional porcelain veneers are considered an irreversible treatment because a thin layer of enamel is removed to make room for them. If a veneer ever wears out or is damaged, it can be replaced, but the tooth will always need some type of covering.
Can veneers be whitened?
No. Porcelain does not respond to whitening products, but it also resists stains very well. If you want your natural teeth to be brighter, we recommend whitening before your veneers are made so we can match them to your new shade.
Does dental insurance cover veneers?
Because veneers are usually a cosmetic treatment, most dental insurance plans do not cover them. In some cases, plans may help when a veneer is needed to repair a damaged tooth. We will review your benefits, explain your cost up front, and offer financing options to fit your budget.
Which is better, veneers or bonding?
Bonding is a faster and more affordable fix for small chips, gaps, and spots. Porcelain veneers cost more but offer a more dramatic transformation, better stain resistance, and a longer lifespan. Many patients use bonding for one tooth and veneers for a full smile makeover.
