Prevent Gum Disease With These 4 Tips
At least one in five Americans has one or more cavities that are currently untreated. Though some cavities can be minor and not cause too much dental damage, many cavity issues can spiral into severe dental problems. That’s why dental care is so important. If your teeth or gums are damaged in any way, you need to schedule some appointments with family dentists and undergo some helpful dental work.
Gum disease is one of the most common issues associated with poor dental care. Here are some things you can do — in addition to regularly visiting your dentist for dental work — in order to prevent gum disease and keep your mouth healthy and strong:
- Brush your teeth often — Brushing your teeth is the most obvious dental tip but its importance cannot be overstated. In order to keep both your teeth and your gums healthy and strong, you need to brush your teeth several times throughout the day. You absolutely must brush your teeth when you wake up and right before you go to sleep, but it’s also recommended to thoroughly brush after every meal you eat throughout the day. (Also, remember to floss!)
- Use a strong mouthwash — Swishing around a sip of mouthwash each day isn’t just for preventing bad breath. Mouthwash works wonders for keeping your gums clean and bacteria free, subsequently preventing all kinds of dental problems.
- Stock up on vitamin C — Vitamin C doesn’t exactly prevent or cure major gum issues like gingivitis, but it will certainly help. Vitamin C can help quell bleeding gums and will improve health aspects pertaining to other parts of your body. According to the National Institute of Health, it’s recommended to take between 100 and 200 milligrams of vitamin C each day.
- Deal with your stress — One of the main reasons gum disease strikes otherwise healthy individuals can be attributed to stress. If you are constantly worrying and stressed out, talk to somebody and try and relax a little bit more.
